When Caitlyn Jenner first transitioned from male to female, her step-daughter Kim Kardashian’s reaction was nothing but positive.
“She’s beautiful, and I’m so proud that she can just be her authentic self. I guess that’s what life is about,” gushed the star, whose mum Kris Jenner married Cait – then Bruce – in 1990.
But the goodwill of Kris, Kim and her sisters Kourtney, Khloe and Kylie and Kendall Jenner came to an abrupt end in 2015 after I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here star Cait gave a series of explosive interviews.
In her June 2015 coming out cover story with Vanity Fair, Caitlyn accused Kris of making her feel “weak and inferior” and claimed she knew all about her desire to be a woman – something Kris vehemently denies.
According to Kris, “there wasn’t a gender issues, nobody mentioned a gender issues.” But Caitlyn claimed she was a “solid B cup” when they met after a previous, aborted transition and said she even dressed up in front of his wife.
By October 2015 Kris was fit to be tied, and in Keeping Up With the Kardashians yelled down the phone to Kim: “He can go f*** himself. I honestly wish I never met this man. I mean, just f*** you, Bruce.”
And Kim’s compassion was also beginning to wane.
“All Caitlyn can talk about is that my mum mistreated her and was awful and all these really rude things, when there’s no reason to bash my mum,” she said.
But it was Khloe – who’d looked to Bruce as a father figure following the death of her own dad Robert from cancer in 2003 – who was the most outraged.
She claimed Cait refused to tell them the truth about her new identity and left them to find out through the media.
“We kept asking him, ‘Bruce, like what’s going on? We’re hearing all these rumours?’ and he kept telling us one thing but really he knew he was transitioning and wouldn’t be honest with us,” she told The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
“So really we felt like the last to know so that was hard for us, especially me.”
Khloe was less measured on the Howard Stern Show, raging, “I don’t give a f*** what you want to do – just stop lying to us about things… Just lay it on the table, what are we doing? What’s happening? Even then he didn’t tell us… we didn’t know when he was going to start fully dressing as Caitlyn.”
Caitlyn reportedly reacted to her outburst with a slew of angry messages, but Khloe was unapologetic.
“I said, ‘You slaughtered my mother and you have the nerve to say, ‘What happened to family sticking together?’ You jumped that ship as soon as you attacked my mum.’
“… She can tell me to f*** off all she wants. I don’t have a relationship with her. I’m done.”
At the apparent behest of her husband Kayne West, Kim eventually thawed and tried to remain “neutral”, helping Caitlyn get ready for the ESPY Awards in July 2016. But when Kris found out, she was devastated.
“I want loyalty. I don’t want f***ing neutral. I’m trying to be as gracious as I can, I’m trying to be as understanding as I can. I’m betrayed. I’ve been f***ed over on so many levels that your head would spin,” the matriarch fumed.
And just when it looked as though the familial animosity was at an all-time high, Caitlyn released her tell all book, The Secrets Of My Life, in which she once again went in on Kris and shared intimate details of their “uncomfortable” sex life.
“I tell Kris about my gender issues before I make love to her. This will always be a subject of dispute between us,” Caitlyn wrote, claiming she kept her female clothes in a locked closet with Kris’ permission.
The family’s reaction was fast and furious. Kim accused her step-parent of trying to achieve success at the family’s expense.
Asked what the chances were of Kris and Caitlyn ever speaking again, she sniped, “Zero, one, no, two per cent and those are Kendall and Kylie. All fair, I think.”
Kourtney branded Caitlyn’s claims “pathetic” and even Kendall – who had remained close to Caitlyn – was livid, banging the kitchen table in fury.
“She goes around dissing the Kardashians but those are the kids that you raised, if you have a problem with them you raised them,” she raged.
“It makes no sense to me that she would go around bashing them for no reason, that’s insane.”
A prolonged estrangement followed with Kim, Kourtney and Khloe refusing to speak to Caitlyn.
“It’s been a little bit tough over the last couple of years on the Kardashian side,” Caitlyn said, admitting she hadn’t spoken to Khloe for two years.
“They don’t want me in their lives, they bashed me pretty badly. It’s devastating when your kids do that. It really hurt…”
But appearing on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories later that year, Cait once again fuelled the fire by admitting she sent Kim a copy of her book but removed the section about her transition because she didn’t “trust” her own family not to leak it to the press.
“No I didn’t tell anybody. Why? It’s none of their business”, I didn’t want them to leak it to the press. There was no reason for them to know about it,” she argued.
On other occasions she pondered whether her actual transition was the reason why her children stayed away. For Khloe, it was too much.
“I’m the victim, I’m the victim, they don’t want to see me’. Oh f*** off and it’s not because you’re trans. That’s not why I’m not talking to you. I’m not talking to you because you’re a bad, mean person,” she raged on KUWTK.
When Caitlyn turned 70 with a star-studded party hosted by Kylie in October, Khloe was a no show due to a prior work commitment.
And last night, despite their now-mended relationship, all five sisters maintained a radio silence as Caitlyn entered the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here jungle, with not a single one tweeting their support.
However, Khloe recently revealed that she and Cait are at last on good terms.
“When I see Caitlyn, it’s fine,” she said. “I think we’ve really come a long way. It was a struggle, I think for all of us, at first the transition. Not because she was transitioning, I think, from just how it was all handled.
“Now we’re all in a really good place. We all just want everybody to be happy with whoever they are.”
